What do you think secondary schools can do to ensure the health, well-being and safety of their students?
For example, take for instance, the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) case which happened in 2002. I can still vividly remember, I was in secondary one and was new to the school. It was the first time Singapore had encounter this situation. The SARS case had taken Singapore by storm. It was a viral infection that tackles the lungs which could eventually be fatal and lead to death. The SARS case had taken a few innocent lives and to minimize the viral infection from taking place in school, the Ministry of Education had ordered schools to close down for a week and all students were to stay at home. This incident led to the postponing of final exams and an obstruction to the curriculum. However, precautionary measures had to be taken. Even when the school reopened after the one week, students were given a thermometer and had been instructed to take their temperature everyday. Students who were found having slight fever or flu had to be sent home to rest. This incident had proved that schools were capable of ensuring health and the well-being of students.
